3 One-Dimensional Nanomaterial-Based Gas Sensors

As mentioned in Sect. 2, MEMS technologies realize ultra-compact, low-power and highly integrated platforms for the gas sensing devices, especially for the portable and ubiquitous sensor applications. Another important technological breakthrough for chemical sensor can be attributed to nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is the technological area dealing with nanoscale structures, nanomaterials and taking the advantage of their unique physical and chemical properties for advanced engineering applications. Especially, a number of novel nanomaterials are being developed and utilized as crucial components for the advanced chemical sensors with dramatically improved sensing performances. The following sections explain the unique properties and advantages of nanomaterials, and their applications to gas sensors. In particular, one dimensional nanomaterials such as nanowires, nanotubes, or nanofibers are explained in more detail.
